Here We Go Again!

At last…. we are on the road again! It’s been three years since we were last in Europe and we had lots of plans to cram into just three months.

We left our bikes in sunny Amsterdam

and we brought our beloved Charlie out of retirement.

He was an instant hit. This was a note left under the windscreen wiper by a fellow camper – and who could disagree?

Note on Charlie

We wanted to put a few miles under our belt as we had a big date in Lucca, Italy (which we will post more on later) and so didn’t spend too much time sightseeing until we hit the Rhineland region and Koblenz, where we camped at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle.

Normally we opt for low, slow travel – but who could resist the pull of a speed-limit-free German autobahn when you are driving a powerhouse like Charlie!

It was full steam ahead for a couple of other travellers too. This magnificent steam train swung rather unexpectedly around the corner.

That was unexpected

We soon swapped our straight, flat German autobahns for our first glimpse of the mountains we would have to climb on the next stage of the journey to Italy, through Switzerland and over the Alps.

Hello Switzerland!

Look out for our next story of Charlie “Hannibal” Charleston conquering the Alps like a warrior and our elegant sojourn in Lucerne.

It’s great to be travelling again and we will keep you posted on our journey as we go.

Renewing Our Wedding Vows in Amsterdam

Getting married in Australia in 2016 was so much fun, we decided to do it again in Amsterdam, for our friends and family who couldn’t make it to Lovett Bay. What a glorious weekend it was!

As we are already married, we opted for a vow renewal, but used the same ceremony that we had created for our wedding. Amsterdam gave us a beautiful sunny day in our much-loved Vondel Park to bring together friends and family. And of course, it’s Amsterdam – so how else to arrive but by bike!

Arriving by bike

We gathered together under the dappled shade of the trees, with flowers tied to branches and silver bunting fluttering in the breeze, thanks to Michelle – who had been in the park for hours, safeguarding the space from other park predators!

Celebrating our love

As were weren’t getting legally married, it meant we could indulge ourselves with an Elizabethan priest, our good friend Justin, as our celebrant.

Justin – our celebrant

We were so touched and excited that so many people made special trips for the weekend – from across Europe, South Africa and even Australia, although click on the video for one set of travellers, who only just made it on time, after a perfectly timed intervention, just as Justin was getting to the good bit!

After the vows in Vondel Park we have a lovely afternoon and evening at the Recycle Lounge Gallery Club – where we filled up on good barbecue, caught up with old friends, stood in awe at the amazing cake our friend Val had made, and then lit up the night sky with a glowing fire pit – it was another great day!

Thanks to everyone who sent us photos – we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed our weekend!

Swimming with Whale Sharks

If you could realise a birthday wish, what would it look like? Would it be 8 metres long, weigh 10 tonnes, be covered in spots and utterly beautiful? Mine was.

Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world, growing up to 14 metres long and weighing over 30 tonnes. Each one has unique markings – their own thumbprint – and every year they take up temporary residence in the warm waters of Ningaloo Reef in Western Australian. I have always wanted to swim with one. This year I got my wish.

It was my surprise birthday present from Geoff, but first we had to drive 1300km from Broome to Exmouth, a two-day race down to the beautiful Western Australia coast, passing slow cattle musters, scuttling monitor lizards and arriving to glorious sunsets.

But never mind that – what about the whale sharks. We were at the very end of the season and though they said there were still big fish around, we would be lucky to see them – but we are very lucky people,  so we got to see three!

We were as up close and personal as you can get, as you will see from our video below and on our YouTube channel.

Whale sharks mouths can be up to 1.5 metres wide, so it is fortunate that they have a taste for plankton and not people. They can be found in tropical waters around the world, but Ningaloo reef is famous for these gentle giants.

In addition to the whale sharks, we also saw dozens of humpback whales, hammer head sharks, and turtles. It was a glorious day!

All the memories and joy are courtesy of Geoff – thank you for this and oh so many other things.

We leave you with the wonderful whale sharks.
